Keeping pets calming in a thunderstorm

If your pets becomes anxious there are some things you can do to help.

  • Create a Safe Space - give them somewhere they can go that is comfortable and away from noise and flashes of lighting.
  • Turn on the TV or a radio to a soothing program.
  • Offer distractions and engage your pet with a food, toys or a puzzle toy to distract them from the storm.
  • Try a Thundershirt (a wrap that provides gentle pressure) or a pheromone diffuser to help your pet relax.
  • Bring pets inside: If your pet lives outside, bring them inside during storms.
  • Keep microchip details updated: If your pet does escape during a storm, a working microchip will increase the chances of them being reunited with you.

You may also need to consider seeking professional help from a trainer or vet for extreme fear or anxiety.

Try to stay calm yourself - pets pick up on your emotions, so your calm demeanour will help them feel more secure.
