Introducing your dog’s new food

Welcoming a New Puppy

Your breeder will usually provide 1–2 weeks' worth of the food your puppy has been weaned onto.
To help your puppy settle in comfortably, here’s how to manage their diet in the early days:

  • Stick with the breeder’s food for the first few days while your puppy adjusts to their new home.
  • Once settled, gradually introduce Koopa’s Choice Puppy food over 1–2 weeks. If you're switching from a very different diet (such as raw), aim for a slower transition of 3–4 weeks.
    • Start with 80% of the current food and 20% Koopa’s Choice Puppy food (refer to our Feeding Guide on the bag for portion details).
    • Gradually adjust the ratio until your puppy is fully transitioned.
  • Some young puppies may prefer their kibble softened with warm water—this is completely normal.

Tummy upsets can be common during this time:

  • Overfeeding is a frequent cause of diarrhoea, so double-check portion sizes.
  • A small spoonful of live natural yoghurt can help soothe digestion.
  • If symptoms persist beyond a day or two, or if other signs of illness appear, contact your vet.

Feeding amounts are based on your puppy’s expected adult weight and age—not their current weight. You’ll find these guidelines on the packaging. If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to help—just give us a call.

For young puppies, aim to feed 3–4 small meals a day, gradually reducing to 2 meals daily as they grow into adulthood.

Feeding an Adult Dog

When transitioning an adult dog to Koopa’s Choice food:

  • Introduce gradually over 1–2 weeks by mixing 20% Koopa’s Choice with 80% of their current food. Slowly adjust the ratio over time.
  • If your dog is moving from a significantly different diet (such as raw or home-cooked), extend the transition period. You may also wish to add a little wet food to the kibble—feel free to call for tailored advice.
  • Portion guidelines are on the pack and based on your dog’s weight in kilograms. If your dog is over- or underweight, we’re happy to help you adjust the plan.
  • You may notice you need to feed a different amount than you're used to as amounts required differ between manufacturers. Please weigh the food to ensure you’re giving the correct amount and resist the urge to overfeed as this can lead to loose stools.
  • During the transition, a dessertspoon of live natural yoghurt daily can help support healthy digestion.
