Understanding and managing fussy eating in dogs

Dog running

Solving fussy eating isn’t always as simple as switching foods, there are many reasons why a dog might seem ‘picky’ about their meals. Sometimes it really is just a matter of taste, and finding a food your dog enjoys can make all the difference.

But in many cases, fussy eating has more to do with how, when, and where your dog is fed, rather than just what they’re being fed.

If you’re unsure where to start, you’re welcome to book a free consultation with me to talk through your dog’s specific situation in more detail.

A Few Things to Consider:

  • Has your dog recently gone off their food or lost weight? This could point to an underlying health issue. In older dogs, things like dental discomfort or arthritis can make eating painful. If you’re concerned, a vet check is always a good idea.
  • Is your dog at a healthy weight despite leaving meals? Chances are, they’re getting enough calories elsewhere! Ask yourself:
    • Am I overfeeding?
    • Are they snacking on too many treats or leftovers?
    • Do I offer something ‘better’ when they don’t eat their meal?
    • If the answer is yes, they’ve likely learned to hold out for the extras!
  • Are feeding conditions putting them off? Consider whether anything has recently changed in their environment:
    • Is mealtime too noisy or busy?
    • Are they distracted or interrupted by other pets, children, or household activity?
    • Do they prefer to eat alone, or with you nearby?
    • Is the bowl noisy or too deep? Older or larger dogs may benefit from an elevated feeder, and placing their bowl on a rug can help them feel more stable on slippery floors.

Tips to Make Meals More Appealing.

Even small changes can make a big difference for a reluctant eater:

  1. Presentation matters – Don’t just drop the food in the bowl. Let your dog see you preparing their meal-pick up the bowl, give it a stir, and build a bit of anticipation.
  2. Warm it up – Add a splash of boiling water and mix to release aromas. Smell plays a big role in a dog’s appetite.
  3. Boost the flavour – Add a spoonful of live natural yoghurt for taste and digestive health.
  4. Top it off – Try adding a little Koopa’s Choice wet food for an extra tasty touch.
  5. Sprinkle a few Chicken Bite or Lamb Bites Treats – A small handful can go a long way in tempting even the fussiest eater.

Every dog is different, and sometimes a bit of trial and error is needed to find the right solution. The good news is, you don’t have to figure it out alone, we’re here to help you every step of the way.
